EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people safely process traumatic or distressing experiences. It is widely recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as an effective treatment for trauma in both children and adults.

When difficult experiences are not fully processed, they can remain “stuck” in the nervous system. This can lead to ongoing symptoms such as anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, emotional overwhelm, or sudden behavioural changes. EMDR supports the brain’s natural healing process by helping to reprocess these memories through bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones).

The result is a reduction in emotional distress, greater stability in day-to-day life, and increased resilience moving forward.

EMDR for Children & Adolescents

EMDR provides a gentle, creative way for young people to process experiences they may not have the words for. Using age-appropriate techniques like butterfly taps, stories, drawings, , EMDR allows children to revisit memories in a safe and supported way while building confidence, calm, and emotional strength.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces distress from traumatic or upsetting experiences

  • Supports anxiety, nightmares, phobias, grief, bullying, or family separation

  • Helps with emotional regulation, self-esteem, and resilience

  • Always tailored to the child’s age, developmental stage, and interests

How It Works

  • Begins with building safety, trust, and understanding

  • Uses creative, playful methods alongside bilateral stimulation

  • Focuses on reducing distress while strengthening coping and self-belief

Training & Approach

I am trained in Child & Adolescent EMDR through the Child Trauma Therapy Centre, building on my EMDR Europe-accredited training. I integrate EMDR with attachment-based and creative approaches, ensuring each child’s therapy feels safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.

EMDR for Adults

For adults, EMDR provides an effective way to process traumatic or overwhelming experiences that may still be shaping emotional and physical responses in the present. It is especially useful where talking alone feels insufficient, offering both structure and depth without requiring you to retell trauma in detail.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces the emotional intensity of traumatic memories

  • Decreases symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, and overwhelm

  • Builds resilience, emotional regulation, and sense of safety

  • Often works more quickly than traditional talk therapy for trauma

How It Works

  • Starts with thorough assessment and preparation, building grounding and safety

  • Identifies key memories connected to current symptoms

  • Uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones) while reprocessing memories

  • Allows integration and relief without overexposure to traumatic details

Training & Approach

I am trained in EMDR through the EMDR Academy UK, an EMDR Europe - accredited provider. My training covers adult focused EMDR, which I adapt to your personal history, needs, and goals. I integrate EMDR with my background in art psychotherapy and trauma informed practice to ensure the process feels safe, supportive, and empowering.
